Yes, the two are independent. Your Azuriom site runs on your WebStrator web hosting and talks to your game server, wherever it is hosted.

Do I need a database?

Yes, a MariaDB database. You create it from your client area, then select it when installing: the Azuriom wizard will ask for its credentials. It is part of the resources you choose when ordering.
